In the Face of Challenge - Alexis Gulliver

When you are faced with adversity in life, what type of person are you? Are you the stand up and fight it head on? Are you the turn and run the opposite direction? Or my personal favorite, are you the pretend that it isn't happening, put your head in the sand type person?

I think that we are all some combination of these different groups. At different times on our lives, or certain types of problems we handle with mixed reactions. Take me for example, if I'm having a financial issue, it is pure panic. I can barely click on the email, or open the envelop because I get this feeling of over-whelming dread like I won't know what to do. On the other hand, if my small business is having a crisis, I want to drop everything else and focus on creating solutions. I want to fight and protect it, even when I have no idea what I'm doing. That being said, how can I have such different reactions and what triggers those? Can you use your Yoga and Mediation practice to get more clarity around how to handle difficult situations?

I like something that Deepak Chopra says, "Day to day life is a series of ups & downs" and he is so right. Usually our days aren't ALL good or ALL bad. We can be having a great day and maybe a few small things go wrong but you don't even notice. Or you are having a really terrible day, and 2 or 3 great things happen, but you are so deep in your misery that you again don't even notice. How do we keep challenges from pulling us through the spectrum of emotions all day? How do we go from a place of reaction to mindful action?

Challenge, Challenge, Challenge equals opportunity for GRATITUDE, GRATITUDE, GRATITUDE

This is what makes the difference between avoiding or crumbling in a hard place in your life. You need to look at the problem as a guest, a visitor in your life sent to grow you in a new way. A guest that asks you to get out of your comfort zone, out of what you "feel" is supposed to be happening. And instead deal with the present moment as it is. Rumi says that a challenge is a gift from God. Treat is as such. Welcome it into your home. Even if it makes your house a mess, you will learn from it. Appreciate it for the lessons that create transformation.

Another way to think about challenge is even if you are in a dark place, where you can't see anything around you for miles & miles. If you have a flashlight, you can shine a little light onto just your next step. The darkness is still all around you but you have a clear path of possibilities. You can have appreciation for that next step, no matter how small, and then you take the step and start slowly moving out of the darkness.

Finally, try repeating this mantra in meditation for 5-15 mins when you are having a hard time. It is to remind yourself that you are your own Flashlight, you have a steady, inner light that can shine a path even in the most difficult moments. Also try my Appreciation and Gratitude video to remind yourself all you have already overcome and how much power you have to continue.
